Unite the union for young people
Overview
Unite is one of the UK’s biggest unions, representing
over two million members working right across the public and
private sector. Our mission is to promote fairness and justice for
working people both at work and in society as a whole. The trade
unions have and will always be radical agents of change. If you
want to change the world come and join Unite!
Young
Reps Project - this was launched in September 2007. Click here for
more information on the project.
Unite the union for working students
Between 1996 and 2006 the number of full-time students who
supported themselves through paid employment grew by more than 50
per cent.
Research shows that it is younger people that are more likely to
face discrimination and bullying at work. Being a member
of Unite entitles you to representation at work when problems
occur. When you graduate you can take your membership with
you. Unite has members in all kinds of graduate professions
such as charities, NHS, Financial services and IT and
engineering.
Young members e-network
The Unite Amicus Section has launched a major new project to get
more young people involved in the union.
The union’s Young Members' e-network was relaunched at the
union’s policy conference in June and has a growing number of
members who receive regular information about workplace issues,
campaigns and events. Recognising the importance of this network
the union wrote to all young members at the beginning of September
with an application to join the network which has received a good
response.
At the same time an invitation was given to attend Regional
Young Members’ Weekend training events which are being held from
mid-October through to early December in all regions.
Existing workplace reps and shop stewards also have an important
role to play in this project. Graham Goddard said: "we need our
existing reps to mentor young members in the union to support them
in their role as a new rep. We have a massive amount of knowledge
and experience out there which our young reps need to call on to be
successful in their role."
Existing reps and shop stewards can sign up to become a mentor
and nominate a young member (aged under 27) to attend an event in
their region. If you cannot identify a young member to nominate
then we will aim to match you up with a young rep to mentor.
If you are interested please click here and complete and
return the application.
